Flow state

At the start of the year I went on a fun loving date to the Aussie Open. My date was a tall, dark, handsome and funny fella who knew the shortcuts of life in a way I didn’t. Don’t.

Before I knew it, we had the best ground pass couch, a backpack with a ‘mini bar’ as he described it, berries, chocolate and a blanket to stay warm on a breezy summers night.

So romantic and soooooooo flow….

During our date, he asked me what my tattoo ‘flow’ was all about? He was asking me to describe a state of being that I often feel but find hard to articulate.

I did my best and saw his mind trying to grasp my words, yet I trusted he could feel what was behind what I was saying.

Although Mr. flow and I were a no go, I’m grateful for the ‘mini bar’ memories and the question that hasn’t left my mind all year- what is ‘flow’ anyway?

Recently, my flow state had been hiding. I’d not felt it, heard from it, cooked with it, or danced in the lounge room with it as easily as I usually do.

Great.

I say great genuinely because although it didn’t feel GREAT, sometimes you don’t know what you got till it’s missing, right?

After a recent car bingle that certainly was an outward reflection of my inward experience, low flow, I had some time off work to stare at my tattoo.

My boss literally said to me, ‘Laura, find your flow again’!

I love that- what a beautiful offering.

So, how does one return to flow?

For me, it’s always about coming back to basics. I try NOT to introduce anything new and instead, return to the simple things that support my flow!

The flow state from my experience is being in harmony with yourself and life. It’s far from ‘hard work’ yet still active and requires effort. It’s a gentle state with a powerful force in your truest direction.

Here’s a handful of back to basics which I’ve collected like shells that support this flow state. Notice which shells jump out to you, that’s a clue.

Feel the feels. Flow is a felt state. A dance between you and life. We have to get into our bodies to feel it and it might be hiding behind some of the feels we haven’t had a chance to sit with just yet. Feel it to heal it.

Watch your words. Are you proud of the stories you tell? Tough question I know. Soz. But words and stories are powerful, choose them like you choose your fro yo toppings- super thoughtfully.

Eat like you LOVE yourself. And I hope you do! Choose colourful whole foods. Be creative but also ask your body what it needs? Not wants, needs? Then eat up.

Rest and Sleep. This is not a luxury, it’s a necessity. One of fav quotes is ‘a good laugh and a long sleep are the 2 best cures for anything’. Please rest babe, it’s the only way to fill the cups.

Laugh. Speaking of, I always say, ‘if I’m laughing, I’m living’. I friggin love to laugh and I have so many hilarious people in my life- most of them are under the age of 9- bunch of cuties. As we laugh, our brain releases endorphins and our stress response is relieved.

Walk, walk, walk. Find your natural walking pace. Not too fast, not too slow. It’s like all your body moves in sync and it feels effortless when you find your rhythm. Then just keep walking.

Self-Compassion. You/I might forget sometimes that we are only human and doing our best with what we know. Self compassion is like a big hug from a beautiful grandma. Its supportive, comforting and exactly what we need- trust me, this is good for US!

Get support. Notice how many people you interact with to get through one day? The barista, the petrol assistant, the school teacher, the colleague, the neighbour, the friend, the partner… It takes a village to raise a child and a HAPPY adult. Let yourself be supported.

Forgiveness. This was a new one for me, I’m definitely a lover not a fighter. Holding a grudge or resentment is exhausting and uses so much of our FLOW energy. Forgive yourself first and then others if you want to find that flow state.

Last but not least, hang out with the best teacher in the whole wide world- Mama Nature. She knows. She knows how to support you, ground you, nourish you and show you how simply blissful life is when you pay attention to it.

If you’re feeling curious about what I’m sharing, ask yourself this question?

How do I connect with my flow state?

The answer will be simple I’m sure of and it will not ask the world of you, just a little bit of consistent effort in your truest direction. Follow the flow.

As you begin to ask and listen, you’ll collect your own unique shells to guide you home. Who doesn’t love a shell right, and a comfy home.

Have fun flowing into this natural state of being, you deserve it! We all do.

P.s. If you need some help asking the right questions to get you back onto your lounge room dance floor (flow state), why not try a soul venture session with me? Shared flow is double flow. Book in now.

Much love always,

💛

  1. So beautiful Laura, my flow state has evaded me in the last month or two. Self Compassion was the shell that resonated with me the most. Brought a tear to my eye. Thank you for this beautiful offering ♥️
