Do you believe in magic?
Awesome, me too!
I’ve met people you know, people who don’t.
People who aren’t quite sure about this rainbows and unicorn type magic I know to be true. Well maybe minus the unicorn and add a butterfly. The only unicorn I’ve seen is the one I used as a prop with my kinder kids when I taught kids yoga.
They loved Cheryl the unicorn, And so did I.
I’ll tell you a story though, and then see your thoughts about magic afterwards.
As a teacher in community services, I always start my classes with a warm up activity. I figure if we are in the line of work of asking others how they are travelling, then we have to get comfy answering it ourselves.
Do the students like it? You’ll have to ask them.
Do they have a laugh and/or learn something? That I can confirm!
This week I decided to run an activity called the rainbow check in which goes like this…
Tell me a sunny spot from your week?
Tell me a rainy spot from your week?
Tell me a rainbow spot from your week?
Their faces screw up on the last question as I go on to explain.
“The rainbow spot is simply the other side of the rainbow. Maybe a tricky thing that’s happened that you can find some learning/gold from. A silver lining”.
So here we have 15 students, anywhere between the ages of 18-60 sharing their rainbow check in’s with eachother.
I’m walking around the room and instead of listening, I’m watching their body language change. Theirs eyes have widened, shoulders relaxed, brains stretched a little further as they find the rainbow within!
And they do! They find their rainbows and they choose to share. Magic!
I’ve had my own sunny, rainy, hardcore rainbow spot this week that I felt deserved a wine and some time after class.
I headed to a random bar after work to complete my marking and as I’m staring out the window of the wine bar, a staff member runs through and saids… ‘quick, check out this beautiful rainbow’!
So there we are. Me, the 2 bar staff, a lady with a dog and some tradies, all standing outside, in absolute awe of the final shades of a rainbow spread across the afternoon sky.
I look up then look at them and smile. Oh life- you funny little character.
As I head back to my wine and laptop inside, I realise that the name of the bar is Oscar’s bar. The name of my beautiful nephew who was too cool for earthside. Oscar’s signature tattoo for our family is white butterflies and rainbows. Thank you gorgeous boy. You really can’t make this stuff up huh!
I truly believe in life, we find what we look for. We can find sun, rain and rainbows if we are willing to take a moment, ask and check in. A rainbow spot gives us the opportunity to see the same thing, but with fresh eyes and colour. A simple check in can make all the difference to the rest of our day, life even.
So, do you still believe in magic?
Awesome, Me too!
