Complete to Create

My students had begun their dreaded assignment role plays. They had to demonstrate a bunch of techniques we’d learnt in our class on communication skills and connecting with the community.

I always warn them at the start of any communication unit, that before they know it, their heads will be tilting one way with lots of head nodding and friends and family will be asking the question ‘are you trying to counsel me right now’?!

I have so many proud teacher moments when I see them shine and step into their natural leadership styles. But I play it cool, because any peep from me seems to throw them I’ve been told- abruptly.

As they embrace their leadership skills, I look down at my notebook to see a bunch of circles I’ve drawn alongside some notes.

Did I know I was drawing the circles?

Nope.

Did I know what they meant?

Yup!

Of late, I’ve been playing with the concept of not introducing anything new until 1 thing is complete. A bit Marie Kondo in a way. I like her minimalist approach to organising life and it’s also very simblissity of me.

In the past, I’ve been notorious for starting a project all inspired then abandoning it for a shinier set of fairy lights. Actually that reminds me…My fairy lights are out of batteries.

There I go, I digress!!!

Projects that have included small business ideas, paint by numbers, job applications, online dating profiles, blog pieces, furniture restoration, books….ahhh the list goes on and, I know I’m not alone in saying this…

However in order for us to welcome something new into our lives, and I mean new and fulfilling, something we want, we need to complete the process of what’s been started – to create space.

With some simple questions we can help to create the space we need for that which we truly desire.

Questions like..

1. What have I started that is sitting half complete?

2. How do I feel about this current outcome?

3. What would it take for me to complete this?

4. How would I feel once this is completed?

If the last answer trumps the answer to question 2, then go forth my friend and enjoy the process of seeing something through to completion.

Yes this may be for big or mini projects, or we could dive that bit deeper and apply this to more internal spaces as well. What’s something you want right now that you just can’t seem to draw towards you?

And, what may need to be felt, heard, shared, let go of, accepted and completed to create the space you need to let it in?

Complete to create aligns with the natural rhythms of life and allows us to have a say in what we finish and what we call forward.

My class is staring back at me at the end of the day, tired faces, glazed over looks as I try to introduce something new.

Old mate in the front row confirms my thinking and circles from earlier….

Laura, I can’t even think about the next assignment until I’ve completed the first one from this morning. My brain is full’.

Complete to create, I learn as much from my students as they do from me!
