This one time, in Queensland, I sat perched at a round wooden table with 2 close girlfriends sitting beside me. We had that post beach sunscreen scent going on, sandy feet and beach hair that looks great for the first few hours- until the heat really settles in.
We sat there, bright eyed yet containing our enthusiasm, as an eccentric ‘other worldly’ older and wiser women sat opposite us.
Her name was Sandy and she was, and maybe still is, a very eclectic clairvoyant on the Gold Coast.
She was staring at each of us, pausing between glares ensuring that she had our full eye contact.
Her guidance needed an interpreter at times, it sounded so ‘other worldly’ that even I couldn’t translate it. But one thing that stuck from our post swim clairvoyant sesh with Sandy, was her potent description of ‘RE’ words!
Sandy explained how ‘RE’ words often provide us with an opportunity to promote self care. She said that if/when self care is needed, think of a RE word that will quench your self care thirst?
REcharge
RElax
REenergise
REevalute
REdo
REad ✔️
REalign
REflect
REdirect
Brilliant huh? There’s billions of words that could fit the bill, have a go.
Yet one weird ‘RE’ word that I pondered with a friend recently, kind of sits to the left of the ‘RE’ words above. A little off centre you know, but that’s why I like it.
REgression…
What does that word even mean?
‘A return to a former or less developed state’
‘A return to an earlier stage/phase of life’
Have you ever felt or maybe at times feel as if you’ve regressed a little in life? Like maybe there’s a flavour of… ‘Oh shit, what’s going on, am I going backwards’?
GREAT!!!
Firstly let me tell you that it’s normal and part of our evolution as humans. REgression is an important part of self care and moving forward.
When you REgress, you get a moment of awareness to realise how far forward you’ve actually come from where you were.
You are forced to do a stock take of what you know now, that you didn’t know back then. And how much you’ve grown from the inside out.
Think about our greatest teachers… children! They often exhibit signs of REgressing (sleeping more or less, grumpy, irritable, hungrier, not hungry, sick, needy etc.) just before they take on their next developmental growth spurt.
These little geniuses have so much to REteach us!
Well the same goes for adults!
Often a REgression can be a friendly visit to the past, only to take a greater leap forward into your next developmental leap- personally and/or professionally.
But, this choice of perception and opportunity is totally up to you for the taking.
By asking yourself ‘What’s the opportunity for self care and growth here?‘ can change the whole cha- cha dance completely.
I get this nervous yet curious smile whenever I regress a little these days. I truly believe that sometimes we have to go ‘slightly backwards’ to gain greater momentum to leap forward.
REgression with a splash of REflection and courage, can be the birth place of your next giant leap forward. Growth can feel very uncomfortable until you grow into it.
RElax and Trust yourself, you’ve come this far. You’ve got this.
