Recently, I had my family over for a dinner party.
My Mum, Dad, Aunty, Sister, Brother in law and their 2 Rug Rats were all attending. It was my first dinner party in my new home and I’ll be honest- I think it’s the first dinner party I’ve hosted for my family…ever!
The build up was exciting and I made the pre arrival as enjoyable as the dinner party itself.
Ziggy Alberts was playing softly through the surround sound, the doors were open allowing fresh air and sunshine to flow through my home, a candle burning whilst I was prepping all the ingredients and the table set with some cute gumnuts I had picked from the gumtree in the front yard. Simple Bliss.
Everything seemed to be going really well and I was quietly impressed with how little stress and fuss dinner parties are…. I know, I know!
They were all arriving in an hour and I’d heard from my sister that her 2 children, although very cool, are not cool AT ALL if they’re hungry! I turned my fancy oven on for the first time to avoid seeing this side of my gorgeous nieces.
The oven dials were turned on to fan force with the temperature up, but there was nothing going on? No fan spinning or heat generating- it was silent. That kind of silence when you’ve lost your phone and try calling it from another phone….but it’s on silent.
Yep- NOTHING was happening and I was baffled?
Now for those men, women, electricians, renovators out there who might be reading this blog, it might seem like an obvious moment where you would know exactly what to do/check? And although obvious in the end, bare with me. There is no judgement here, only learning and growth my friends!
As the panic began to rise, my mind wondered how I could possibly cook this delicious meal I had prepped – in the microwave? I decided the best thing to do in that very moment, was to have a cup of tea on the porch!
I refused to go into panic mode, especially whilst I’d had such an enjoyable time leading up to their arrival.
I poured myself a cup of tea and sat on the porch staring at the gumtree. I paused and slowed the moment right down, not because I had time up my sleeve but because I know clarity doesn’t come from an anxious panicky mind!
As I paused for about 5 minutes, I sipped my tea and laughed. And as I laughed, I suddenly wondered if the power board switches were all turned on? Now I know me, this is not something I would think of or even really consider. Yet in my calm state- clarity, wisdom and common sense won!
I was RIGHT! The oven switch was the only switch pointing south!
I flicked it on, finished my tea and walked into the kitchen to hear that sweet sound of the fan spinning and warmth generating from inside the oven walls.
The power of pausing is one of the greatest secret weapons we have at our disposal. Whether its to problem solve a dinner party situation, or to make a life changing choice, to speak your truth to another in a calm state, or for those few moments before you roll out of bed to begin your day!
The ‘pause’ is simply powerful and always gives you the choice to connect with the answers and wisdom that lives inside of you.
What’s something in your life that could do with a ‘cup of tea on the porch’ kind of pause?
Worth a ponder huh?!
Simple Bliss x
