In 2010 I was on a flight from Vietnam to Thailand. As I buckled into my budget Air Asia seat, I was ready to embrace the unknown adventure that awaited me at Chiang Mai airport.
Whilst I sat in my seat ‘hoping’ my big orange backpack was on the same flight, I enjoyed the lightness of not having to lug around my pack full of all things familiar and happy pants.
All I had sitting with me on my budget seat was my new (second hand) thick 996 page book titled ‘Shantaram’. Oh how excited and terrified I was to read this novel I’d heard so much about from travellers near and far.
As I tucked into the first chapter I was struck by a sentence that still haunts me to this day. In context to the books storyline, it said something like… ‘the truth is like a bully in the school yard, no matter how hard you try to hide from it, it’s always there lurking around waiting to catch you’!
Terrifying huh? Not the truth, well maybe the truth sometimes, but more the way it was described. Likened to a bully, trying to get you and trip you up. Who wouldn’t be trying to run from their truth when you think about it that way?
Of recent Ive had one of those truthful experiences likened to a ‘bully in the school yard, hiding behind the tree, waiting for me to walk past and catch me’!
However, I choose not to think of the truth in this crappy way. The truth for me doesn’t feel like a bully, it feels more like a wise, salt n pepper haired, long cardigan wearing prophet. Still quietly hanging out in the background, maybe behind a tree, but not at all trying to trip me up.
Nope, the truth feels like it’s just there patiently waiting for me to listen so it can guide me forward, safely. And the best way to connect with this old wise one is… gently!
As I listened gently to what this old wise one was telling me recently about a certain situation, I took simple action that felt right, truthful. Just tiny little steps forward that felt a bit better then not doing anything. Needless to say, there was no bully hiding in the background but rather an opportunity to grow in a more truthful way!
So what’s your truthful wise prophet look like? And if you were to sit gently and quietly with it (you) what would it like to wisely share with you hmmmm?
A true story to help you along your way I’m guessing!
Simple Bliss
