SA • The Festival State

Apart from the obvious, that when one leaves their familiar routine, heads off on a plane for 70 minutes and arrives to meet their bestie in the lower middle part of the country to attend a Festival during Mad March, good times are GUARANTEED!!!

But, there were a lot of small things that made my recent visit to ‘SA • The Festival State’ so simply satisfying!

1. I loved the proudness of South Australian’s (SA) in showcasing their state. We literally had an itinerary planned for us by our Uber driver on our way home from WOMAD Monday evening. He was adamant that we saw the best of SA during our stay. His excitement was contagious and so was the flight attendants, barristers and locals when they new we were from interstate.

2. People’s skin is so clear in SA. I know that’s a weird thing to notice, but I noticed it. Lovely, clean, tanned and fresh looking facial skin was evident. Even mine improved as the days rolled by. There must be something in the soil, or the wine, or both?🤷🏻‍♀️🌻

3. The house numbers were so obvious. Like, no matter which gorgeous home I was admiring in our air bnb neighbourhood, the house number was staring right back at me. Easy to see, easy to find, no fuss when Mr/Mrs Postie rocks up with a surprise package from grandma 👵

4. Even though I’m not eating sugar at the moment, I ate sugar in SA! And each delicious piece of homemade cake I ate had this incredible flavour of ‘love and effort’ added to it. I felt great before, during and afterwards 👌

5. Not many people are out and about exercising. I don’t know what their up to, but there was a genuine sense of peace floating through the tree tops and it made me want to slow down a little, and take it easy. ‘What’s the rush I thought?’

6. From the moment I arrived I couldn’t remember what state I was in? 🤷🏻‍♀️ SA has this subtle feeling of familiarity mixed with no fuss. This state makes sense and often leaves you feeling like you could be anywhere you’ve been before. I could easily live in my Air bnb forever and not quite realise I’d left home. That’s a really nice feeling actually.

7. Their wines🍷 tastes like their cakes, made with ‘love and effort’. No hangover in sight!

8. Mad March in SA is a tribute to the JOY of life. With WOMADelaide and the Fringe Festival playing together like doubles tennis partners. The city comes alive, people are present and appreciating all things fun and fairy lights! It may only be one month, but it’s a month to remember.

9. Each cafe we went to just kept giving. Like you’d think you’d seen it all, and then there was another court yard, another sun room, a garden area or… a beautiful vegetable patch 🍅 🌽

10. This state breads musical 🎶 talent and nourishes it with local appreciation. Some of the best buskers and musicians I’ve seen in my life come from Adelaide.

And although the company on this trip is what really made all of the small things stand out even more, I’ve decided that a bi-yearly if not yearly visit to SA • The Festival State is good for my health. A dose of guaranteed JOY to add to my diet each year. Mad March and all the small things SA has to offer has left an impression on me!

Who’s coming with? Shared JOY’s double JOY remember!

Simply blissful
