Let me take you down the road from my house, about 250 meters on the right, to a place called Beaches!
If you walk past this venue during the day, it will be locked up with the bar stools sitting on top of the long wooden tables, and scattered signs on the window saying things like; ‘SIZE DOES MATTER’ playing this Saturday night, or PIZZA & JUGS $30 every Friday!!!
Now if that’s not enough to draw you in, (some of you are pretty fussy I know :-)), then walk past this entertaining venue on a Friday, Saturday or even Sunday evening at around 11pm.
You will see disco flashing lights, people smiling from ear to ear twirling on the dance floor, and some scary (yet quite friendly) bald and tattooed bouncers standing out the front- some with all their teeth!
Are you ready to come inside with me….? Great! Let’s go.
Inside the music is LOUD and SIZE DOES MATTER 3 piece band are rocking out some covers which the crowd are LOVING! From Matchbox 20 and Nickelback, to Aussie classics like ‘That’s Freedom’ by Johnny Farnham.
Now, I certainly wouldn’t rush to take a national or international visitor to this venue straight off the bat- you do have to be in the mood for it. However, there is something about this place that makes me smile and last Friday night while I was dancing with some girlfriends to ‘You can’t hurry love’….. I realised what this smiley feeling is all about!
MOST people are there to have FUN! There is no judgement, well maybe a little when you first walk in – but once you’re in and commit to just lightening up and letting others do the same- a great night is had by ALL!
I love how people’s judgement, which some of us can wear like a badge of honour, is unconsciously left at the door with the scary bouncers. It’s really hard not to get caught up in the weird yet fun vibe that’s swirls through the space!
Don’t get me wrong- boundaries are necessary with some of these smooth operators on the dance floor, such is life hey! But generally- it’s just about connection, laughing, and enjoying the moment with the people around you! And in this day and age- I think that is probably some of the best medicine for our souls.
Stay for an hour- or even 2, the time is irrelevant! Yet the experience will be similar!
And on your way out, you get to consciously choose if you collect that ‘Judgey Jacket or not? Maybe you just collect your jacket and take that weird- yet funny sober smile home with you 250 meters down the road!
